“Blissful and Exhilarating”: First-time Authors Celebrate Writing

“Before 2016 there was no African American History Museum in Washington, DC.” Such begins the memoir of one student at Center City PCS, Capitol Hill where fourth and fifth graders have spent two months writing poetry and memoir with 826DC.

826DC in NYT!

At the May release party for our collection of students essays, “Having to Tell Your Mother is The Hardest Part,” young authors shared their poignant stories with an audience of their peers and supporters.

The 826 Stand

826 National was inspired to take a stand on issues of inclusion and diversity in light of the many events that spotlighted social and racial injustices throughout the country. We as educators, volunteers, and caring adults need to be aware of the wide range of issues our students face on a day-to-day basis.

826DC explores “Perception”

This year, 826DC embarks on an exploration. We’ve decided to focus the attention of our programs, staff, and young authors around a central guiding theme: PERCEPTION. As an organization, we’re taking a deeper look at ways of seeing and being seen.

On August 26, we’re celebrating 8/26 day or as it’s unofficially known, “National Youth Literacy Day” with America’s two favorite pastimes: dessert and baseball.

The Thing With Feathers

This summer 826DC students learned all about our feathered friends who inhabit the District, as well as those who pass through during migration. They studied: bird evolutionary origins, bird identification tips and techniques, migration, hazards to migratory birds, non-native North American species, habitats (including nest building) and even how birds warn us about the effects of climate change.
