Young Writer Showcase

Young Writer Showcase June 12 4-6 PM at MLK Library

On June 12th, join us downtown at the MLK Library from 4-6 PM to celebrate, support, and hear from young local writers!

826DC students past, present, and future will share their writing—some of which is now available at the library—with the community. You’ll also learn from some of the students with a special writing craft panel, co-moderated by 826DC Interim Education Director Christopher Lee and Ron Charles from The Washington Post.

“Most literary events feature and focus on adults,” says Cristopher, 826DC’s Interim Education Director, “but it doesn’t have to be that way. Young people in this community have incredible writing to share and perspectives you won’t find anywhere else! That’s what we’re going to celebrate together at the Young Writer Showcase. This event is all about them.”

Details!

Mark your calendars for June 12th, 2024, 4 PM to 6 PM at the MLK Library (901 G Street Northwest). We’ll be on the main, ground floor—you can’t miss us!

This is a free event for all ages.

Want to Read?

All DC students ages 6-18 (and 826DC alumni) are welcome to share their writing, in any language. Each reader will have up to five minutes to share stories, essays, poems, scripts, lyrics, speeches, spoken word, work in progress, and more.

You can sign up here.

When Duty Calls

This event will be extra special—it’ll also be the grand debut of When Duty Calls, the soon-to-be-published book of heroes written by sixth-grade authors from Brookland Middle School!

Those students will be some of the readers at this event.

“We won’t just get to enjoy vivid, imaginative writing,” Christopher continues. “We’ll also encourage some of DC’s newest published writers. That’s important! Here’s hoping everybody can come out and support them.”

Showing up where it counts

826DC would love to have as many people as possible at the Young Writer Showcase, but you can also support our free youth writing programs all year long! Learn more about becoming an 826DC volunteer here or donate here to help us write with more DC students.
