We’re excited to welcome a new cohort of young writers to 826DC’s Youth Writers in Residence (YWR) program!
Youth Writers in Residence is an opportunity for high school students to take their writing to the next level while becoming leaders in the 826DC community. Throughout the school year, Youth Writers work alongside 826DC staff to develop their own independent publication projects, strengthen their writing skills, and explore new ways to use their creativity and voice.
How YWR Works
Youth Writers in Residence grow as both writers and mentors. Each YWR student selects one consistent day, Monday through Thursday, to join our After-School Writing Lab throughout the school year. During that time, they serve as mentors to younger students, supporting them as they write, explore their creativity, and build confidence in their voices.
At the same time, YWR students receive mentorship and support from 826DC staff as they develop their own independent writing and publication projects. The program gives young writers the space to take ownership of their creative work, strengthen their leadership skills, and learn how to successfully manage a long-term independent project.
By being both mentored and becoming mentors themselves, Youth Writers have the opportunity to grow as writers while playing an active role in the 826DC creative community.
