Collective storytelling experiences

DC students and their teachers join us for an unforgettable, two-hour collaborative storytelling workshop. We lead students through the building blocks of short-form creative writing, including the story mountain framework, character development, and dialogue. Students leave as published authors, with their own publication, fully illustrated and bound in 826DC’s one-of-a-kind bookbinding studio.

Our field trips are free for all DCPS and DCPCS schools where at least 60% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch and/or identify as English Language Learners.

826DC currently offers field trips:
  1. At our writing center in Columbia Heights for up to twenty students at a time
(We can reserve multiple dates to accommodate your full class. We can also work with you to schedule multiple groups on one day, if that would be more convenient!)
  2. In your classroom

Teacher-driven writing education

826DC partners with teachers to develop and deliver project-based writing instruction, based on each classroom’s existing needs and learning objectives. Together, with the support of 826DC staff and guest teaching artists in each session, the students hone in on specific writing skills and other parts of the writing process.

Write the future

Every student gets published

The Young Authors’ Book Project (YABP) is a yearlong writing and publishing project. Over the course of the school year, students get hands-on experience with every aspect of writing, editing, and publishing—from rough drafts all the way to a polished, professionally-published book. We make these books widely available for readers across DC and beyond.
