This year’s Young Authors’ Book Project (YABP) cohort is working on a book of poetry! The students, third and fourth graders at Savoy Elementary, wrote these poems together at a recent session.
HOW IT FEELS AT THE MOVIES (4th Grade, Class A)
Quiet as a mouse
Hungry like I didn’t eat in a thousand years
The popcorn and candy jump and walk and play
Moon magical mist
The popcorn danced
Danced with soda and popped
Movies movies move
HOW IT FEELS AT THE BOWLING ALLEY (4th Grade, Class B)
The bowling pins are screaming and laughing
Wiping the floor with a mop
The bowling alley is as shiny as a star
Broken and brave
Dark and dangerous
Strong and slow and sweet
HOW IT FEELS AT THE CIRCUS (3rd Grade)
Tree train think
Games giraffes and gators
Clowns and cotton candy
The circus is as magical as witches and wizards
Exciting as going to Florida
as dangerous as fighting
Popcorn is walking
Lights as bright as the sun
Elephants dancing on a rope
People having fun
The student wrote these poems by each contributing a line! These kinds of poems are sometimes referred to as “exquisite corpses.” A strange name, but a wonderful time.
The Young Authors’ Book Project is a yearlong writing residency with a local school, resulting in a published book in the springtime. If you would like to learn more about the book that these students publish at the end of this school year, be sure to join 826DC’s email list and/or follow us on your favorite social media platforms.
