Calling all local authors and writers! You can share your skills with DC students through 826DC’s Visiting Authors Program, which brings new and established voices together for unforgettable classroom discussions and writing activities.
We’re expanding the program this year, thanks to the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities. Right now, we are also looking to add to our roster of Visiting Authors.
What do Visiting Authors do?
Our Visiting Authors support classroom learning by bringing lessons to life. They do that by helping to share literature, serving as mentors, and inspiring students to write through dynamic curricula.
What can one expect as a Visiting Author?
Between March and September 2019, Visiting Authors will spend time with DC students in their classrooms and facilitate a Common Core-aligned lesson plan written by 826DC.
We’ll start by pairing you with a classroom, based on the teacher’s chosen lesson plan. Before you arrive, students will also learn a little bit about you and the writing activity you will be doing together.
On the day of the visit, teachers and 826DC will be in the classroom to support you as you facilitate the lesson. Together, we will provide the materials, space, and atmosphere for an impactful and sustainable writing experience for students.
Each lesson plan will be unique and may require one or two visits, depending on the lesson content. Examples of past lessons/workshops include Interview Skills, Journalism Basics, Comic Creation, College Application Essay Boot Camp, Letters to the Editor, Mindful Writing, and more!
Know someone who would be well-suited for this program? Feel free to share this blog post or this one-pager with them.
