…in a land called Columbia Heights, 826DC supported local students with their writing skills and helped teachers inspire their students to write.
Our quest? Make that happen through our six signature programs:
In-Schools Writing, Editing, & Publishing Program
826DC offers support to teachers in the K-12 classroom through our most flexible and teacher-driven program. Teachers can choose a curriculum delivery model, or small group/one-on-one support.
After-School Writing Lab
Homework gets done during our volunteer-supported sessions, complemented by daily writing prompts that equip students with key skills and result in publication.
Evening & Weekend Workshops
Young writers explore dynamic topics and leave with a piece of writing of which they can be proud.
Field Trips
In these two-hour, teamwork-centered writing sessions, DC classrooms participate in the Storytelling & Bookmaking process, leaving our writing center with their very own freshly printed and bound original storybook.
Reading All-Stars
826DC’s Saturday literacy program provides Harriet Tubman Elementary students with one-on-one tutoring at their school.
Young Authors’ Book Project
Our flagship publishing program: each year, the Young Authors’ Book Project (YABP) results in a professionally-published student anthology.
A gift of any amount helps keep us going, and keep our creative writing programs free for all students in DC. Here’s how:
$8.26 could…
equip a DC student with a week’s worth of supplies for our After-School Writing Lab, where homework is done and magic is made!
$50 could…
transform our writing center by adding more seating where students can curl up and read a book from our on-site library!
$100 could…
keep our one-of-a-kind on-site bookbinding studio working—and looking downright dazzling—for a whole month!
$250 could…
sponsor two field trips for 50 young authors to team up with local illustrators and tell their most imaginative stores—with characters like Cheeseburger Motorcyclist, Fluffy the Magnificent, and Sir Awfulaful!
$500 could…
make a DC teacher’s wish come true by funding us to join their classroom and lead inventive, meaningful writing curricula that inspires their students to write!
$750 could…
sponsor a workshop series with one of our community partners, helping us bring the magic into local neighborhoods and businesses!
$1,000 could…
replace ye olde laptops in the writing center, which our Teen Writing Lab students use to craft their college essays!
$5,000 could…
cover the cost of printing this year’s YABP—a zany, first of its kind, fully-illustrated book of science fiction fairy tales written by forty third-grade authors at Bridges Public Charter School!
This year, we’re gearing up to offer our resources to more students throughout DC—implementing YABP with Bridges Public Charter School for the first time, growing our community partner program with other area nonprofits, increasing out in-classroom presence in Wards 7 and 8, and writing with more neurodiverse students.
We’re excited for the journey ahead, but we need your help to make this happen.

To maximize your impact, consider making your contribution a monthly recurring gift.
Together, we can reach our happily-ever-after—and make magic happen all year long for young people here in DC.
