Tiffany and Alexandra, two wonderful AmeriCorps VISTA service members, recently joined the 826DC team! Check out this Q&A to get to know them both a little better.

What drew you to 826DC?

TW: The mission of getting writers to express themselves through creative writing. The importance of self-expression at a young age is so valuable to me.

AB: My love for the creative arts and the opportunity to serve the DC community!

What was your favorite subject in middle school, and why?

TW: Social Studies, becuase I always loved learning about communities, citizenship, et cetera.

AB: My favorite middle school class was Dissection Studies. I loved learning about the anatomy of different species.

Which book would you love to read again for the first time?

TW: “Savage Inequalities: Children in America’s Schools” by Jonathan Kozol

AB: “When Breath Becomes Air” by Paul Kalanithi

What inspired you to get involved with this kind of work, and why do you think it’s so important?

TW: I love education and children. I always wanted to be a part of children showing creativities in ways they possibly would not do on their own. Being a support to a child in any way that will embrace who they are is the kind of work for me.

AB: Throughout my education, I had great teachers who gave me the opportunity to express myself through music, art, and writing. Becuase of these expereinces, I was able to achieve many personal and professional goals. I believe that everyone should have the opportunity to have their voice heard. 826DC is where young scholars can begin and further develop their own voice through writing and, in doing so, gain the skills and confidence for endless success.
